North Gate

The North gate of the Castle is rather small and is located inside the tower Π10 of the walls. The gate, internally, is opened to the southeast side of the tower, while its exit is located on the northeast side and ends up at the inner corridor of the main fortress wall.
About twenty meters north, there is the pylida (small gate) on the bulwark which leads outside of the fortifications. The current form of the gate, as well as the tower that hosts it, are the result of interventions during the post-Byzantine period. It is notable that spolia (material from older buildings) have also been used for the construction of the gate, like a part of a marble slab and a column’s shaft.
Finally, its feasibility could be connected to the communication with the river Arachthos, which is believed to have been navigable until the Middle Ages.
