Two days of musical events with works by Greek & Italian composers in first world performance, with a view to highlighting the intercultural tradition of Arta & Puglia regions

The Laboratory of Knowledge & Intelligent Computing (KIC-Lab) of the Department of Informatics and Telecommunications in collaboration with the Department of Music Studies of the University of Ioannina based in A r t a, organized a two-day music event, in the framework of the project “HERMES” – Heritage Rehabilitation as Multiplier Cultural Empowerment within Social context (https://www.hermes-culture.eu/), which is funded by the Cross-Border Program “INTERREG Greece-Italy” and is implemented with the co-financing of the European Union and Greece.

On Friday, June 17th, in the courtyard of the Paregoretissa church, and Saturday, 18th June, at the emblematic site of the Roman Odeion of Nicopolis, the newly established Symphonic Orchestra and the Choir of the Department of Music Studies presented works by Greek and Italian composers in first world performance.

The events welcomed by Prof. Chrysostomos Stylios, Director of KIC-Lab and scientifically responsible of the project, who highlighted the way that is pursued the visibility and utilization of the tradition of the most important cultural monuments of the regions of Arta and Puglia, through educational theatrical and musical activities as well as visual arts.

The Vice Rectors of the University of Ioannina, Mr. Minas Paschopoulos, and Mr. Stavros Nikolopoulos, welcomed this opportunity to extend a warm greeting to the public. They emphasized the importance of the partnership agreement between the Department of Informatics and Telecommunications and the Department of Music Studies.

The Associate professor and Dean of the Department of Music Studies, Mr. Athanasios Trikoupis, indicated to the importance of the operation of the Department’s Symphonic Orchestra, which was established during the current academic year (2021-2022) with the support of the HERMES project.

In the first part of the Concerts the choir accompanied by a set of musical instruments, under the direction of Professor Antonis Ververis, represented the choral works of three Greek composers who lived and studied in Italy: Francisco Leontaritis, Hieronymus the Cantor, and Spyridon Xyndas. In the second part, works by Raffaele Parisini, Nikolaos Metaxas Tzanis, Lorenzo Camilieri, Antonio Liberali, and Demetrio Androni were performed.
